With fire on his feet, Bill got the hell out of the "Valley of Death" early on day four. With several
dozen switchbacks and thousands of deet-hungry mosquitoes, we were able to pull ourselves up and out of the valley
and onto Barker Pass before noon. It was on Barker Pass that we met Kris Spike. Kris Spike, an native Australian
concerned about snow-bounded passes, joined us for the rest of our trip. As a group of five, we glissaded down
from Barker Summit and ascended Twin Peaks by late afternoon. With wildflower lining the ridgeline beyond Twin
Peaks, we pressed on and did not break for the day until almost Ward Peak.
