Rough granite and thick over-grown thickets and brush put this downhill ride on the skids. To make things especially
interesting, the closer we got to our destination, the more impervious the mosquitoes. Thanks to Bill's astute
observations, we later found out that we were headed into the "Valley of Death". At the lowest elevation
for the whole trip, Rubicon Springs is a small corridor between the Desolation Wilderness and the Granite Chief
wilderness used by thousands of 4x4 jeepers every Summer. Although the population of the valley was extremely
light for mid-week – all of six other people – the rugged dirt roads were heavily impacted by the numerous vehicles.
Did we forget to mention the mosquitoes?

nuggets of granite. |
